 LTAI the company

The Company formerly titled Airmotive Ireland Ltd and Lufthansa Airmotive Ireland Ltd, is based in Rathcoole, Co Dublin,Ireland and was founded in 1980 by the Irish Airline Aer Lingus. The move to Rathcoole from Dublin Airport in 1980 , where Aer Lingus’ small engine repair facility was based was as a result of early government initatives to establish an aviation maintenance infrastructure in Ireland.

In the early years, Airmotive’s primary role was involved in the maintenance of the engines installed in the Aer Lingus fleet. However overtime the reputation of this shop for quality and flexibility grew and with it also grew the volume of third party    work accomplished at the Rathcoole facility.

By 1990, ten years after the first engine was inducted over 70% of the Airmotive business was sourced from outside the Aer Lingus group. The product line in the early years comprised JT3D and JT8D engines. JT9D engine types were introduced in the mid 1980’s and by 1990 the   CFM56-3 engine variety was on board to replace the fading JT3D product line.

Airmotive also entered niche markets such as CFM56-2C engines which power the DC9-70 series aircraft and the JT9D-7Q engine which power many B747-200 aircraft at this time. The Airmotive shop could proudly claim at this time that they were the  first manufacturer independent shop in Europe to overhaul CFM56-3 engines.

In 1997 when Aer Lingus decided to divest itself of non core activities,Lufthansa Technik acquired a 60% stake in the Company. Two years later the German company increased its stake in Lufthansa Airmotive Ireland from 60 to 100 percent.

At this time also Lufthansa airmotive took the decision to enter the CFM56-7 engine market to support customers who would be transitioning from B737 Classic aircraft to B737 New Generation aircraft.

In 2003, due to Lufthansa Technik´s new branding concept, the company´s name was changed once again to Lufthansa Technik Airmotive Ireland (LTAI).

To date, LTAI has overhauled more than 3,500 engines.
